Boston, Mass. - (April 16, 2025) - GBH has announced a year-long series of multi-platform programs, events, and collaborations with partners in Boston and across the Commonwealth to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of America.

Starting this spring, GBH’s America 250 initiative will highlight content across all GBH-produced shows, platforms, and program areas that explores the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence and the state of American democracy today. Partnerships include Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

“As the birthplace of the American Revolution, Massachusetts is at the center of a national movement to acknowledge this historic moment,” said GBH President and CEO Susan Goldberg. “GBH has a longstanding legacy of storytelling and bringing our community together, and we invite everyone, from our Boston neighbors to our global audiences, to find what sparks their curiosity and join us for this special year of learning, reflection, and celebration.”

GBH’s America 250 offerings include:

  • Programs across every GBH production. For instance, Revolutionary War Weapons , a new one-hour film from award-winning PBS science series NOVA, uses modern technology to examine the military weaponry colonists used in their fight for freedom.
  • Events such as a special evening with filmmaker Ken Burns presented with the Boston Symphony Orchestra to preview Burns’s upcoming series The American Revolution . And the GBH Media Summit, a gathering of journalists, scholars, philanthropic leaders, experts on civic participation, and media representatives to discuss the role media plays in present day democracy.
  • Reporting exploring local perspectives, histories, and landmarks related to the Revolutionary War and the founding of America from across Massachusetts, with a rolling GBH News series, From Colony to Commonwealth: Massachusetts and the American Revolution . And a new series featuring the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Massachusetts Historical Society on The Culture Show called Countdown to 2026 focused on the culture, the people, and the events leading up to the American Revolution.
  • Curated content by the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB), a collaboration between GBH and the Library of Congress, highlighting pivotal moments in U.S. history and culture.
